729 Yale Update, $550K Raised, and Upcoming Housing Justice Rallies
729 Yale Acquisition Update + Resource Generation Fundraising Campaign Milestone
In 2024, LA Chinatown CLT began working to acquire 729 Yale Street after tenants faced eviction, and we launched a campaign to support the purchase and keep the building permanently affordable. Although the evictions were later dropped, we continued exploring a financially sustainable path to acquisition, including meeting regularly with the tenants, conducting financial analyses, identifying qualified project sponsors, and preparing applications for local public funding sources for social housing and homelessness prevention, such as the Measure ULA and LACAHSA programs.
We also partnered with Resource Generation’s LA Chapter on a solidarity fundraising campaign in 2025 and raised over $550,000 from nearly 100 donors to support Chinatown’s first community-owned, permanently affordable housing! These funds can be used as equity for the Yale acquisition and future community-owned housing opportunities in Chinatown, which would also help position the CLT to secure additional public funding. We are deeply grateful to the Resource Generation community for their organizing and solidarity in making this milestone possible!
This year, our priorities include hiring our first full-time staff member, developing a five-year real estate plan, engaging with local tenants, and continuing to build partnerships to secure funding for community-owned housing.
